Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the profile of students’ recount text reading comprehension before and after using the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method, as well as the effectiveness of using the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method as a learning method on students’ recount text reading comprehension. The method used in this research is a quantitative method using True-Experimental. Two classes were taken as research samples consisting of 25 students in each class. The two classes were designed as experimental and control classes. The experimental class was taught with the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method while the control class was taught Think-Pair-Share method. The population of class VIII at SMPN 4 Ambarawa consisted of 50 students, and the sample taken was 50 students (25) students for the experimental class and 25 students for the control class). The sampling technique used was randomly sampling. In addition, the research was carried out through the following steps: giving a pre-test, applying the treatment, and giving a post-test. The analyzed in this study were obtained through written tests. The findings of the study showed that the pre-test mean score (45.8) was lower than the post-test mean score (77). The students’ mean scores increases up to 31.2 points after they learned to recount text using the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method. The T-test result (21.51) is higher than the T-table (1.711). Then the N-gain is 0.57, placing it in the medium-level effectiveness category at the interval 0.3 ≤ g ≤ 0.7. So it is evident that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method is effective in teaching recount text because it shows a significance effect on the reading comprehension of recount text in class VIII students of SMPN 4 Ambarawa.
