Abstract

ABSTRACT Prasetyo, Eri Kukuh (2023) Speech Acts Analysis of Language of Instruction used by English Teachers case Study in SMK At-Taqwa Muhammadiyah Miri in The Academic Year 2023/2024. Graduating paper, English Education Department, Teacher and Education Faculty, Salatiga State Islamic University (UIN) of Salatiga. Counselor: Dr. Sari Famularsih, S.Pd.I., M.A The research aims to answer the following research questions: (1) What kind of speech acts used by English teachers in teaching learning at SMK At-Taqwa Muhammadiyah Miri? (2) What are the dominants of speech act used by English teacher in teaching learning at SMK At-Taqwa Muhammadiyah Miri? The objectives of this research are to find out the kinds and the dominants of speech acts. This research used qualitative methodology and adopted descriptive analysis. The writer analyzed the data from conducting research. The techniques of collecting data were observation and documents. First, the writer recorded the English teachers in the English teaching and learning process used an audio recorder. Next, the writer made transcripts of the dialogues. Third, the writer classified the transcribed dialogues in the data sheet. Last, the data were classified according to Searle’s and Austin’s theory of speech act. The result of the research shows that there are three types of speech acts performed by the English teachers in classroom communication. They are locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary. The Declarative/Statement of locutionary act is the most dominant act (84 from 173 data). Next, there are five types of illocutionary; declarative, representative, expressive, directive, and comissive. The directive is the most frequent act (89 from 173 data). In addition, the perlocutionary of to get the hearer to do something is the most frequent act (65 from 173 data). In conclusion, the dominant use of directive acts implies that the teachers dominate the conversation in the English language classroom.
