Abstract

ABSTRACT Ristanto, K.A. 2024. “Analysis of The Fifth-Semester Students of The English Department on Their Learning Strategies In Developing Their English-Speaking Skills Academic Year 2023 /2024”. A Graduating Paper, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. English Education Department. Salatiga State Islamic University. Counselor: Faizal Risdianto S.S., M.Hum This research discusses the speaking skills learning strategies used by fifth-semester students of the English Education Department at the Teacher Training and Education Faculty of UIN Salatiga. The objective of this research is to explain the strategies employed by these students and to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the applied strategies. In conducting this research, the researcher utilized descriptive qualitative research with data collection through the use of questionnaires and interviews. The theoretical framework for data collection was based on Rebecca Oxford's theory called SILL (Strategy Inventory for Language Learning), incorporated into the questionnaire and interview questions. The findings of this research indicate that the students almost universally employ all the strategies encompassed in SILL. These strategies include effective memorization (memory strategies), using natural thinking processes (cognitive strategies), compensating for missing knowledge (compensation strategies), organizing and evaluating their learning (metacognitive strategies), managing emotions (affective strategies), and learning with others (social strategies). Secondly, the strengths observed when students apply these strategies include their ability to master vocabulary, improve fluency in spoken English, and gain increased confidence when communicating in English. However, weaknesses were also identified, such as a tendency to overlook grammatical accuracy due to a focus on fluency in speaking. In summary, this research highlights the comprehensive adoption of various language learning strategies by fifth-semester English Education students. While these strategies contribute to proficiency in vocabulary and fluency, there is a need to address weaknesses related to grammar accuracy.
