Abstract

This research aims to investigate the use of Webtoon as a media to learn reading autonomously. The objectives of the research were, (1) to examine the Webtoon features that support student in learning reading autonomously, (2) to investigate how the students identify the aspects of reading comprehension exist in Webtoon, (3) to describe the way students learning reading autonomously using Webtoon. Descriptive qualitative method was used in conducting this research. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews with five respondents of the fourth semester students of the English Education Department at UIN Salatiga. They were choosen using purposive sampling. The findings of this research demonstrate that Webtoon has many features that are able to support students in learning reading autonomously including search feature and favorite genres, daily update, preview, vertical format, notes, comment section, and notification reminder. In addition, Webtoon features also help students in identifying the aspects of reading comprehension exist in Webtoon. Furthermore, the way students learn reading autonomously using Webtoon are by setting goals, deciding what to learn and when to learn, deciding learning style, practicing what they have learned, enjoying the process of learning, increasing their motivation, and improving learning outcome. Therefore, Webtoon may become an alternative media to learn reading autonomously.
