Abstract

Fajriyani, Mestika. 2024. The Students’ Perception on the Use of English Podcast as a Media for Independent Learning. A Graduating Paper, English Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, State Islamic University (UIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Prof. Dr. Sa’adi M.Ag. Keywords: Perception, English Podcast, Media, Independent Learning The research aimed to find out the answer to (1) how students perceive the use of English podcast as a media for the independent learning; (2) the challenges and obstacles faced by students when using English Podcast as a media for the independent learning; and (3) students’ efforts to overcome challenges and obstacles in using English Podcast as a media for the independent learning. The researcher used qualitative methods by collecting data using structured interviews. The subjects of this research were thirteen students of the English Language Education Department, fifthsemester, State Islamic University (UIN) Salatiga. Based on the research results, most students have a positive perception of using English Podcast as an independent learning medium. They said that they were happy and enjoyed using English podcasts as an independent learning medium and they also thought that this medium could improve their English skills. Students encountered several challenges and obstacles such as differences in accents, new vocabulary, and the speed and clarity of the speaker's pronunciation, which made respondents confused in understanding the content of the message in the podcast, and the most common obstacle was the internet network because English podcasts can be accessed using it. Meanwhile, students propose strategies to overcome this problem by asking other people to help explain what they do not understand, playing the podcast repeatedly until they understand the content, looking for other podcasts that are easy to understand and have subtitles or transcripts, memorising lots of vocabulary and translating new vocabulary, and finally look for a comfortable location with a strong internet network.
