Abstract

This study aims to answer the following research questions: 1) What kinds of questions are used by English teachers during classroom interaction in seventhgrade students at SMP Negeri 2 Tuntang? 2) What types of questioning technique do English teachers use for giving the questions to the seventh-grade students in SMP Negeri 2 Tuntang?. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach, then the data collection techniques using classroom observation and interviews. Based on the observation, the researcher found out that the teachers used three kinds of questions proposed by Richard and Lockhart (1994), which are 33 procedural questions, 116 convergent questions, and 38 divergent questions. The findings also showed that the teachers used four questioning technique by Cao Wangru, with the details 16 prompting, 17 probing, 29 repeating, and 4 redirecting. In this case, the teacher has a difference in the frequency of using the questioning technique. Teacher A often uses repeating technique, but Teacher B more often uses probing technique.
