Abstract

Petaya, Linna Jalin. 2024. Modality Analysis of Donald Trump-Hillary Clinton First Presidential Debate. A Graduating Paper. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. English Education Department. State Islamic University (UIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Dr Hanung Triyoko, S.S., M.Hum., M.Ed. This research was conducted to analyze the modality that was used by Donald Trump-Hillary Clinton in their First Presidential Debate in 2016. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research method and modality’s Hillary approach for analyzing the data which is divided into obligation, inclination, and probability. The data of this research was assembled by The Washington Post in transcript form or can be accessed in YouTube Platform; However, in this graduating paper focuses on the transcription form, and all the data was taken from the third segment of the debate about “Securing America”. The results of the study found that both candidates used obligation more than other modality forms. The researcher also found that Donald Trump used obligation and probability more often than Hillary Clinton, which led to the ultimate assumption that in the third segment of this debate about “Securing America”, Donald Trump showed full commitment and efficiency in answering the questions, also a visioner and powerful leader than Hillary Clinton.
