Abstract

Nur’aini, Rahma Sinta. 2024. Teachers’ Beliefs in Code Switching in English Language Teaching: An Exploratory Case study Policy Based-Practices. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. Islamic University of Salatiga. Conselor Rr. Dewi Wahyu Mustikasari, SS., M.Pd., Ph.D. This study explores teachers' beliefs in integrating code-switching into English language teaching practices based on educational policies. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with an exploratory case study approach and semi-structured interviews as data collection. The participants of this study were ten English teachers from different schools and various levels, ranging from elementary, junior high, high school, and vocational school in Salatiga. They were interviewed with ten questions, then recorded in text through the website. The results found that there is a policy of Law No. 20 Year 2003 article 33 that regulates teachers in using foreign language as the language of instruction, and the policy of using code-switching depends on each education unit. In addition, with the code-switching policy for English teachers, teachers tend to violate the policy for the sake of students' needs. Schools that do not have a policy on code-switching tend to optimise their strategies to meet students' needs. Many teachers develop personal policies on code-switching based on their own experiences and beliefs about the benefits of this method for improving student understanding and engagement. The findings suggest that code-switching can help overcome language barriers, enrich students' learning experiences, and enhance teaching effectiveness.
