Abstract

This research focuses on deixis in song lyrics from Taylor Swift's Folklore album. Seven Folklore songs in the album are discussed, which are cardigan, august, betty, exile, my tears ricochet, seven, and this is me trying. The aim of this research is to analyze five types of deixis, and interpret the reference meaning of deixis are found in the song lyrics of in the song lyrics of Taylor Swift's Folklore album. The researcher chose the album "Folklore" to analyze because this album was chosen as the best album of 2020 by Rolling Stones magazine and has a uniqueness in its storytelling by using poetic and imaginative language. Therefore, the song lyrics will be analyzed using a pragmatics approach, and Levinson's (1983) deixis theory. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data used consists of seven songs from Taylor Swift's Folklore album based on the most streamed songs on Spotify, then categorized into various types of deixis. The researcher found 140 deictic, they are person deixis with 72 deictic, spatial deixis with 21 deictic, temporal deixis with 31 deictic, social deixis with 6 deictic, and discourse deixis with 10 deictic. The most frequently deixis is person deixis which consists of 72 deictic expressions. This is because the main theme of the album is human relationships and personal experiences.
