Abstract
The aims of this research are to answer two research questions: 1) what are the classification of illocutionary acts found in “Elemental” movie and 2) why does certain illocutionary acts classification become the most dominant in “Elemental” movie. This research was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected by using the documents method and qualitative audio and visual material method. The data of this research were obtained through direct observation of the utterances in the dialogues in the “Elemental” movie. The researcher used Searle’s (1976) classifications of illocutionary acts and other relevant theories to analyze the data. The results of this research showed that there are five classifications of illocutionary acts found in the movie, including directives, representatives, expressives, commissives, and declarations. Based on the research limitations, the researcher found 129 data from the movie. It consisted of 50 data (38,8%) directives, 41 data (31,8%) representatives, 29 data (22,5%) expressives, 7 data (5,4%) commissives, and 2 data (1,6%) declarations. Directive acts become the most dominant classification found in the movie because it is a type of speech that has the aim of making other people do something by simply uttering their real intentions. Keywords: illocutionary acts, pragmatics, movie, “Elemental: Forces of Nature”
