Abstract

Cahyani, Dini Nur. 2024. The Effectiveness of Know-Want-Learn (KWL) Strategy toward Descriptive Reading Comprehension (Pre-Experimental Research of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Muhammadiyah (Plus) Salatiga in the Academic Year 2024/2025). UIN Salatiga, Academic Year 2024/2025. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Islamic University of Salatiga. Counselor: Noor Malihah, S.Pd., M.Hum., Ph.D. This study examines the effectiveness of the Know-Want-Learn (KWL) strategy toward descriptive text reading comprehension of the eleventh-grade students at SMA Muhammadiyah (Plus) Salatiga in the academic year 2024/2025. The researcher employed a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design, involving 33 students from classes 11 F.1 and 11 F.2. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test, and analyzed using a paired sample t-test and N-gain test. The results showed that the average pre-test score was 56.67, while the post-test average significantly improved to 87.73, indicating a 54.80% increase. The two-tailed significance value was 0.000, less than 0.05, and the t-test result (12.883) exceeded the t-table value (2.037), indicating a statistically significant difference. Additionally, the N-gain value of 0.71 categorized the improvement as high. These findings suggest that the KWL strategy improves students’ comprehension of descriptive text. Based on these findings, the researcher can conclude that the KWL strategy positively impacts reading comprehension, with the alternative hypothesis (Ha) accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) rejected. Keyword: Know-Want-Learn (KWL) Strategy, Descriptive Text, Reading Comprehension
