The objective of the study are: (1) To find out the use of Illustration Pictures to improve students’ writing ability in narrative text of the eighth grade of SMP Islam Al-Azhar 18 Salatiga. (2) To know the extent of the students’ improvement in writing ability after the use Illustration Pictures for the eighth grade of SMP Islam Al Azhar 18 Salatiga. The subject of the research consists of 20 students of the class VIII C at SMP Islam Al-Azhar 18 Salatiga. This research methodology is Classroom Action Research. This research was conducted in two cycles, each involving planning, acting, observing, and reflecting the implementation of illustration pictures in teaching narrative text. The use of Illustration Pictures was successful in making the students interested and enthusiastic during learning activity. The result of the research showing a significant improvement in student performance. In Cycle I, only 40% of students met the passing standard, where as in Cycle II, this percentage dramatically increased to 85%. The improvement between cycle I and cycle II were 45%. This indicates that there is an improvement of students’ writing ability after the use of Illustration Pictures. Keyword: Writing Ability, Illustration Pictures
