Abstract

The aims of this research are: (1) To measure the correlation between the students’ vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension in recount text, (2) To analyse the significant correlation between the students’ vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension in recount text. The research was a quantitative correlational research method. In this research, the data collection was carried out using tests; the sample were 32 students of the eight grade. The technique of analysis data was done by calculating coefficient using Pearson Product Moment in SPSS. The means for the students’ vocabulary mastery is 90.78 and students’ vocabulary mastery was in excellent level based on table 3.1. While the means for students’ reading comprehension in recount text is 97.19, students’ reading comprehension was in excellent level based on table 3.2. The result of this research presented that there was a significant correlation between both of variables. It is proved by the rcount (0.708) is higher than rtable (0.349) in degree of significance 5%. It is considered that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. The conclusion of this research showed that students’ vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension in recount text have a significant correlation. It means that if the students’ have good vocabulary mastery, they also have good level in reading comprehension in recount text. The only participants in this study are 8 A grade students from SMP N 07 Salatiga. In terms of the researcher’s restrictions, this study on comprehending recount text with vocabulary mastery of the 8 A grade students of at SMPN 07 Salatiga in the second semester of the academic year 2023/2024 was conducted. There is a potential correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension in recount text because the test was designed based on lesson plan and discussion researcher with English teachers. English teachers teach material according to the lesson plan and according to the competencies possessed by students.
