Abstract

Hatmat, Nurkomareeyah. 2024. The implementation of Problem based learning in teaching speaking of narrative genre at eighth grade students of SMP N 4 Salatiga 2024. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Islamic University (UIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Dr. Setia Rini, S.Pd., M.Pd. This study examines the implementation of Problem-Based Learning in teaching speaking in the narrative genre to eighth-grade students at SMP N 4 Salatiga. The research aims to find out the implementation of the learning module for teaching speaking in the narrative genre by using problem-based learning and to analyze the difficult teach and solution teacher of the narrative genre speaking skill development using problem-based learning. This study using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and documentation. The subject of this research was 1 English teacher of SMP N 4 Salatiga. The findings this study shows that teachers followed the steps of PBL, from introducing real-life problems to grouping students, facilitating problem-solving, and assessing their progress. One of the main challenges encountered was students' limited vocabulary, which made it difficult for them to fully participate in storytelling activities. To address this, teachers provided vocabulary instruction prior to PBL activities and organized students into mixed-ability groups to encourage peer support. In conclusion, PBL proved to be a suitable method for enhancing narrative speaking skills among eighth-grade students. Despite the challenges, particularly regarding vocabulary, PBL encouraged active participation and critical thinking, making it an effective instructional approach for teaching speaking.
