Abstract
This study aims to determine the correlation between Emotional Intelligence (EI) and reading comprehension in higher education students of Postgraduate Program English Education Department at UIN Salatiga in the academic year 2023-2024. This study uses quantitative method by using Goleman's Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (1998) and Reading test as data collection methods. The researcher also took the students of English Graduate Education Program at UIN Salatiga as the research subjects. The findings showed that there is a positive correlation between Emotional Intelligence and Reading comprehension of students. In addition, the level of emotional intelligence of Postgraduate English Language Education Department pupils at UIN Salatiga is in the medium category with a percentage of 72.4% and reading comprehension test results of postgraduate English Language Education students at UIN Salatiga are in the medium category with a percentage of 69%. Based on the findings of the correlation test, it is evident that there is a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.32 between emotional intelligence and students' reading comprehension abilities. Therefore, the emotional intelligence variable demonstrates a moderately strong correlation with students' reading comprehension abilities. Furthermore, the significance level for the correlation between emotional intelligence and reading comprehension abilities among students at the higher educational level is 0.000 (sig < 0.005), leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H0).
