Abstract

The purposes of this study were to know the students’ profile of vocabulary mastery before and after treatmeant using Crossword Puzzle Games and to know the effect of the use of Crossword Puzzle Games to teach vocabulary at the seventh grade students at SMP N 3 Salatiga in the academic year 2024/2025. This study used pre-experimental research. The technique of collecting data were used test and documentation.There were two types of tests used: pre-test and post-test. The participants of this study were 30 students from the class of VII-C SMP N 3 Salatiga. The data were analyzed using the Paired Sample T-test and the N-gain test. The findings of this study showed differences in students' vocabulary mastery before and after treatment utilizing Crossword Puzzle Games. The difference between the pre-test and post-test mean scores showed the improvement in the mean score. The mean score after treatment is 86.00 which is higher than the score before treatment, which was 63.50. The N-gain score is 0.61 , the T-test value is 20.604 and the 2-tailed significant value is 0.000 according to the statistical analysis. This indicates that there are significance difference of the students’ vocabulary mastery before and after using Crossword Puzzle Games. Students' vocabulary mastery was improved after receiving treatment with Crossword Puzzle Games. The use of Crossword Puzzle Games as a teaching media have an effect to students' vocabulary mastery. It can be concluded that the use of Crossword Puzzle Games as media has proven to be effective to teach vocabulary.
