Abstract
This study examines the use of passive constructions in recount texts written by senior high school students in Karanggede, focusing on identifying distinctive syntactic features and analyzing gender-based differences. A total of 90 texts were analyzed 45 written by male and 45 by female students resulting in the identification of 434 passive sentences. These were categorized into three types: personal passive (178 sentences, 41%), agentless passive (152 sentences, 35%), and impersonal passive (104 sentences, 24%). Gender-based analysis showed that female students produced 271 passive sentences (62.4%), while male students produced only 163 (37.6%). The Chi-square test revealed a statistically significant difference in the distribution of passive voice types across gender (p < 0.05), indicating that female students are more inclined to use a wider variety of passive constructions. These findings suggest that gender influences syntactic choices in English writing. The results provide valuable insights for educators in developing more gender-sensitive and grammar-focused instructional strategies, especially in teaching passive voice within narrative and recount genres in EFL classrooms.
