Abstract

This research investigates the correlation between students’ reading habits and writing mastery in recount texts. The objectives of this study are (1) to find out whether there is a significant correlation between reading habits and writing mastery and (2) to analyze the contribution of reading habits towards writing skills of the eighth-grade ICP students of SMP Muhammadiyah Plus Salatiga in the academic year 2024/2025. This study applies a quantitative approach using a correlational research design. The data are collected through a reading habit questionnaire and documentation of students’ recount text writing scores. The data are analyzed using Pearson product moment correlation and linear regression. The result shows a low positive correlation with a correlation coefficient of 0.239 and a significance value of 0.204 (>0.05), which indicates that the correlation is not statistically significant. The result implies that although reading habits positively relate to writing mastery, they are not a dominant factor influencing students’ writing skills. Other pedagogical factors such as teaching methods, vocabulary engagement, extracurricular activities, and external courses may significantly develop students’ writing ability. This highlights the importance of a comprehensive instructional approach integrating reading with active writing practice and meaningful language use.
