Abstract

Putri, Retna. 2025. The Effectiveness of the Skimming Technique on Students’ Reading Comprehension in Descriptive Text (A Quasi-Experimental Research at the Seventh Grade Students in the Academic Year 2024/2025). A graduating paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. Islamic University of Salatiga. Counselor: 4. Noor Malihah, S.Pd., M.Hum., Ph.D. This study aimed to prove the effectiveness of the skimming technique on seventh-grade students’ reading comprehension of descriptive texts at SMPN 2 Salatiga in the 2024/2025 academic year. The research employed a quasi-experimental design using a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group. The samples were 64 seventh-grade students selected through purposive sampling, consisting of two existing classes. The experimental group (Class VII H) received treatment using the skimming technique, while the control group (Class VII G) was taught using intensive reading. Both groups were given the same pre-test and post-test to measure their reading comprehension improvement. The results showed that the experimental group’s scores increased from 59.84 to 84.06, while the control group’s scores increased from 55.31 to 77.34. An Independent Sample T-test analysis yielded a significance value of 0.003 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups. These findings suggest that the skimming technique is more effective than intensive reading in enhanching students’ reading comprehension of descriptive texts.
