Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the correlation and determine the significance level between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension on the ability to write recount texts of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 7 Salatiga in the 2024/2025 academic year. The research method used in this study was quantitative using a correlational design. A total of 32 eighth grade students selected through a cluster sampling technique were the subjects of the study. The data were collected using multiple-choice tests for vocabulary mastery, open-ended questions for reading comprehension test and reordering sentences in a paragraph for recount text writing ability test. Pearson product moment formula in SPSS 30 was used to calculate and evaluate the data. The study’s analysis of students’ test scores resulted in a few findings. There are three research results: (1) Vocabulary mastery has a positive but insignificant influence toward writing ability with sig score 0.534 > 0.05 and t count 0.629 < t table 2.040, (2) Reading comprehension has a positive and significant influence toward writing ability with sig score 0.022 < 0.05 and t count 2.424 > t table 2.040, (3) Vocabulary mastery, reading comprehension and writing ability of recount text have a correlation value of r 0.453 > r table 0.361. Vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension are simultaneously significant with a sig value of 0.036 < 0.05 and an F value of 3.741 > Ftable 3.33 and have a contribution (R2) of 20.5% towards students' ability to write recount texts. It can be concluded that there is a moderate correlation and significant influence between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension toward the ability to write recount texts of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 7 Salatiga in the 2024/2025 academic year.
