This thesis investigates the use of code-mixing employed by the third-semester students in their oral presentation at the Listening and Speaking for Academic Purposes class at Universitas Islam Negeri Salatiga. The primary objective of this research is to: 1) classify the types of code-mixing used by the students; and 2) identify the functions of code-mixing used by the students in their oral presentations. Employing a descriptive qualitative research design, the study was conducted through systematic observation of student presentations, followed by audio recordings that were transcribed into written text for analysis. The findings reveal that students frequently engage in code-mixing, utilizing five out of the six types identified by Suwito's theory. Specifically, the analysis indicates 16 instances of word insertion, 12 of phrase insertion, 2 of hybrid insertion, 2 of repetition insertion, and 4 of clause insertion. This code-mixing behavior is prevalent in EFL settings, as it aids students in bridging language gaps and enhancing clarity. Furthermore, the research identifies six out of seven functions of code-mixing based on Hoffman’s theory. The most frequently observed functions include discussing a particular topic, emphasizing points, and clarifying content for interlocutors. Key words: Code-mixing, Oral presentation, EFL.
