Abstract

This study investigates the effect of the ecological system on students’ English achievement across gender in Islamic boarding-based junior high schools in Salatiga using a quantitative factorial design that combines both correlational and comparative analysis. The participants consisted of 151 seventh-grade students, including 63 male and 88 female students. Data were obtained from an ecological system questionnaire and students’ second-semester English midterm scores. The results showed a significant gender difference in English achievement, with female students achieving a higher mean score (75.6 – categorized as “good”) than male students (52.8 – categorized as “poor”) based on the Kurikulum Merdeka standard. A regression analysis revealed that the ecological system significantly influenced students’ English achievement overall (B = 0.227, R² = 0.125, p < .001), explaining 12.5% of the score variance. However, when analyzed by gender using a split file technique, the ecological system had no significant effect on male students’ scores (B = 0.002, R² = 0.000, p = .960), but showed a modest yet significant effect on female students (B = 0.108, R² = 0.051, p = .037). Despite these differences, the analysis found no statistically significant difference in the ecological system’s influence between genders, indicating a relatively balanced ecological impact. These findings suggest that while the ecological system contributes to English learning, other contextual or individual factors may play a more dominant role in shaping students’ academic achievement, particularly within Islamic boarding based-school environments.
