Abstract

Maulana. M. Aziz 2024. Pre-Service Teachers’ Perceptions of Apperception in Supporting English Language Learning: a study of pre-service teachers in Central Java Postgraduate program of State Islamic University (UIN) Salatiga Supervisor: Dr. Setia Rini, M. Pd. This study investigates the implementation of apperception teaching practices in English classes, focusing on how teachers utilize apperception to connect new material with students‘ prior knowledge. Using a qualitative approach with thematic analysis, data were collected through interviews involving pre-service teachers. Results indicate that teachers perceive apperception as an effective method to enhance student engagement, comprehension, and motivation by making lessons relatable and contextually meaningful. The alignment of apperception with Indonesia‘s Independent Curriculum, which emphasizes independent, student-centered learning, is significant as it supports the curriculum‘s goals of fostering critical thinking and contextual understanding. However, teachers also reported challenges, including limited resources and difficulty in consistently linking content with diverse students' backgrounds. This study recommends professional development in apperception strategies, increased access to teaching aids, and the integration of apperception into curriculum frameworks to support teachers in creating more effective, inclusive learning environments. The findings highlight apperception‘s potential to bridge academic content with students' real-life experiences, enhancing the quality of English language education in schools.
