Abstract

Fitria, Yulfa, Postgraduate in English Education Department, State Islamic University (UIN) Salatiga, 2025, Title “A Comparative Study of the Effectiveness of PQRST And QAR Techniques on Students' Reading Comprehension in Recount Texts Across Different Motivation Levels at MTs SA Pancasila Salatiga in the Academic Year 2024/2025” Under the guidance of Norwanto, S. Pd, M. Hum, P. hD. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the PQRST (Preview, Question, Read, Summarize, Test) compared to the QAR (Question-Answer Relationship) techniques on reading comprehension in recount text for different motivational levels. The research was conducted using an experimental design involving four groups: male experimental, male control, female experimental, and female control. The experimental groups were taught using the PQRST method, while the control groups received instruction through the QAR technique. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests to measure reading comprehension, as well as a questionnaire to assess students' motivation. The findings revealed that students taught using the PQRST method showed significantly higher improvement in reading comprehension and motivation compared to those taught using the QAR technique. Statistical analyses, including t-tests and Path analysis, supported these results. The findings revealed that both the PQRST and QAR techniques significantly improved students’ reading comprehension. However, the QAR technique showed slightly higher effectiveness in terms of students’ mean gain scores. The study also found that students with high motivation performed better in reading comprehension than those with medium motivation, while gender did not significantly influence students’ reading outcomes. Moreover, there was a significant interaction effect among teaching techniques, gender, and motivation levels on students’ reading comprehension. Keywords: PQRST, QAR, reading comprehension, students' motivation, English language teaching
