Abstract

This research aims to investigate the language programs utilized in developing English language environments for students at Pondok Tahfidz Yanbu’ul Qur’an Menawan. The study is guided by two main research questions: (1) What the language programs are used in developing the English language environment at Pondok Tahfidz Yanbu’ul Qur’an Menawan. (2) What challenges and strategies are in implementing the language programs in developing the English language environment at Pondok Tahfidz Yanbu’ul Qur’an Menawan. The study uses a qualitative research approach, focusing on teachers as language coordinators and students from the language board responsible for executing language programs. Data collection methods included observations and interviews, which were analyzed and interpreted through qualitative research procedures to provide insights into the language programs, challenges, and strategies. The findings indicate that various activities, such as English for daily communication, vocabulary of the day, speech practice and competition, and role-play conversations, significantly support students in acquiring the English language. In addition, the challenges occur during the development of language environments, such as inconsistencies in implementation, lack of resources, cultural and linguistic barriers, and varying levels of student proficiency, which are obstacles in implementing language programs. Furthermore, strategic steps are used to overcome existing problems through management control policies, English environments for students’ practices, and supplementary programs (language clubs, additional classes for beginners, and integrating English with other subjects).
