Abstract

Syifa, Afifah Hasna. 2025. The Effectiveness of a Genre-Based Approach to Improve Integrated Reading and Writing Skills for Eighth Grade Students at SMP Dharma Lestari in the Academic Year 2024/2025. A Graduating Paper, Salatiga: English Education Department. Faculty of Education and Teacher Training. State Islamic University of Salatiga. Counselor: Mrs. Suesthi Maharani, M.Pd. This study was conducted at SMP Dharma Lestari to examine the effectiveness of the Genre-Based Approach (GBA) in improving students' integrated reading and writing skills. The objectives of this study are (1) to analyze the students' integrated reading and writing skills before and after being taught using the Genre-Based Approach and (2) to evaluate the effectiveness of the Genre-Based Approach in improving these skills in class VIII in the 2024/2025 academic year. This study used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design in the form of a nonequivalent control group design. The participants comprised 54 students, divided equally into experimental and control groups. The experimental group was taught using the Genre-Based Approach, while the control group used the Grammar Translation Method. The t-test results showed a significant difference (Sig. 2-tailed = 0.001 < 0.05), indicating that the Genre-Based Approach significantly impacted students' integrated reading and writing skills. Furthermore, the average N-Gain score in the experimental group was 76.82%, categorized as effective, while the control group achieved only 45.05%, categorized as less effective. These findings confirm that the Genre-Based Approach is an effective model to enhance student's ability to comprehend and produce texts in an integrated manner, emphasizing context and structure. Keywords: Genre-Based Approach, Integrated Skills, Reading and Writing, Quasi-Experimental Design
