Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the mastery of language features in writing recount texts among eleventh-grade students at SMK Negeri 3 Salatiga in the academic year 2024/2025. The research focused on three specific features commonly found in recount texts: past tense, time connectives, and action verbs. The objectives of this study were (1) to find out to what extent students mastered those language features in writing recount texts, and (2) to identify which feature was most mastered and which was the most challenging for them. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design, using document analysis as the main method of data collection. The data were obtained from 29 students’ recount texts and were analyzed using a coding system to identify the accuracy, consistency, and variety in the use of the targeted language features. The researcher also applied investigator triangulation by consulting with a secondary English teacher and utilized the Grammarly application for technological triangulation to validate grammatical accuracy. The results showed that time connectives were the most mastered feature, with 75.9% of students demonstrating fully correct or mostly correct usage. Action verbs followed, with 72.4% of students meeting the same level. In contrast, past tense appeared to be the most challenging feature, as 48.3% of students showed partial or poor mastery. The findings suggest that while students were generally able to structure recounts chronologically, many still struggled with verb form accuracy, especially when applying past tense consistently. Keywords: language feature mastery, recount text, past tense, time connectives, action verbs
