Abstract
This research aims to: (1) to describe how far the implementation of storytelling techniques improves students’ pronunciation skills in speaking; and (2) to find out the factors contributing to the improvement of students' pronunciation through storytelling techniques in seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Bringin. The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR), which was conducted in two cycles; each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The subjects of this research were 32 students of class VII. Data collection was carried out through tests (pre-test and post-test), observation sheets, field notes, and documentation (lesson plans and students’ performance results). The results showed an improvement in students' pronunciation skills in speaking. The average score increased from 60.93 in the pre-test to 66.59 in the post-test of Cycle 1, then to 70.56 in the post-test of Cycle 2, and finally reached 75.06 in the final test. The percentage of students who reached the Minimun Completion Criteria (KKM) also increased from 18,75% to 62,5%. The improvement was influenced by several factors such as the use of interesting and familiar story content, visual and physical involvement in storytelling performance, repeated practice, clear modeling by the teacher, peer collaboration, and increased student confidence. This research had a positive impact on the speaking learning process, especially in enhancing pronunciation, encouraging active participation, and reducing students’ speaking anxiety in English class.
