Abstract

This research aims to: (1) to find out the teacher implementation of using mind-mapping technique in improving writing skills of grade 8 students at SMPN 1 Pabelan. (2) to find out the research improvement in the writing skills of grade 8 students' in recount texts after applying a Genre-based approach using mind-mapping technique at SMPN 1 Pabelan. The researcher conducted a Classroom Action Research (CAR) consisting of two cycles, with each cycle involving the steps of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of this study were 33 students of class 8C at SMPN 1 Pabelan. Data collection was carried out through tests,, observation sheets, and documentation (lesson plan and student assignments). The result showed an increase in writing skills. The average student post-test score increased from 57.48 in cycle 1 to 74.87 in cycle 2. The percentage of students who reached the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM) also increased from 21.21% to 75.76%. This increase is due to the implementation of mind-mapping technique which helped students organize their thoughts more clearly and recall relevant vocabulary more easily. Visual support provided by the mind mapping also guided students step by step through the writing process. Additionally, students became more familiar with the structure of recount texts, reduced grammatical and sequencing errors, and showed better organization of ideas. Most importantly, students’ confidence in expressing their ideas through writing increased significantly. Keywords : Mind-Mapping Technique, Writing Skills, Recount Text
