Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the profile of students' writing skills before and after being taught using the Team Game Tournament (TGT) technique, and to assess the effectiveness of the TGT technique in teaching writing skills to seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Salatiga in the academic year 2024/2025. This research applied a true-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group design. The participants were 64 students, divided equally into two groups: class VII E as the experimental group, which received treatment using the TGT technique, and class VII F as the control group, which was taught using the lecturing method. The data were collected using writing tests, validated, and tested for reliability. The pre-test average score for the experimental group was 68.38, and the post-test average increased to 87. In contrast, the control group’s pre-test score averaged 65.41, with a post-test score of 74.53. The gain score for the experimental group was 0.58 (categorized as moderate), while the control group had a gain score of 0.25 (low category). Statistical analysis in this study employed non-parametric tests due to the data not meeting normality assumptions. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test was used to compare students’ writing scores before and after treatment within each group, while the Mann-Whitney U Test was applied to examine differences between the experimental and control groups. The Mann-Whitney U Test results revealed a significant difference in post-test scores between the two groups, with the experimental group outperforming the control group (Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 < 0.05), indicating that the Team Game Tournament (TGT) technique had a significant effect on students' writing skills.
