Abstract
ABSTRACT Falihah, Fina Aimmatul. 2025. A Correlational Study Between Listening Strategies and Speaking Skills in the Grade XI Immersion Class at MA Hasyim Asy’ari Bangsri Jepara 2024/2025. A graduating paper. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. English Education Department. Salatiga State Islamic University. Counselor: Dr. Setia Rini, M.Pd. This study aims to investigate the correlation between listening strategies and speaking skills among Grade XI Immersion students at MA Hasyim Asy’ari Bangsri Jepara. The research focuses on identifying which types of listening strategies, metacognitive, cognitive, or socio-affective, are dominantly used by students and whether these strategies significantly influence their speaking abilities. The study is grounded in the assumption that better listening strategies support improved oral communication. This research employs a quantitative correlational method. Data were collected from 33 students using two instruments: a listening strategy questionnaire and a speaking performance test. The questionnaire was based on the Listening Comprehension Strategy Inventory (LCSI), while the speaking skills were assessed through pronunciation, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Both instruments were validated and tested for reliability. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS, including tests of normality, linearity, and Pearson’s correlation. The findings revealed that metacognitive strategies were the most dominantly used by students. A moderate positive correlation (r = 0.394, p = 0.023) was found between listening strategies and speaking skills, indicating a significant relationship. These results suggest that effective use of listening strategies, particularly metacognitive ones, contributes positively to students’ speaking performance. The study recommends integrating listening strategy training into English instruction to enhance students’ communicative competence.
