Abstract

Musta’anudin, Azza. 2025. Students’ Perception of Using Global Chat Room in a “Black Desert Mobile” Game as a Strategy to Improve Writing Skills on seventh Semester Students of The English Education Department at UIN Salatiga. Counsellor: Ahmad Samingan, M.Pd. This research explores how seventh-semester students of the English Education Department at UIN Salatiga improve their writing skills through the use of a global chat room in the MMORPG game Black Desert Mobile. The study aims to: Identify students’ writing profiles when using the chat room, examine how they enhance their writing skills through this platform, and analyze the strategies they apply in that process. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews involving seven participants. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results show that students have strong academic performance in writing-related subjects, such as Academic Writing. Their writing development is supported by frequent informal exposure to English in the chat room. Real-time writing practice enhances their fluency, clarity, and confidence. Moreover, students enrich their vocabulary and improve sentence structure through repeated interaction. They also apply self-directed strategies, including self-correction based on peer feedback, daily engagement, and experimenting with new expressions. These findings suggest that global chat rooms offer meaningful, accessible, and motivating environments for writing practice, making them valuable supplementary tools in EFL learning.
