Abstract

ABSTRACK Ghaisani, Miftahuliya Nisa. 2025. The Effectiveness of Scramble Technique to Teach Reading Skills on Descriptive Text of Seventh Grade at SMP N 2 Gladagsari, Ampel in the Academic Year 2024/2025. A Graduating Paper: English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Islamic University of Salatiga. Counselor: Marisa Fran Lina, M.Pd. This research aims to determine (1) the profile of students’ reading skills on descriptive texts before and after being taught using the Scramble Technique, and (2) the effectiveness of the Scramble Technique in improving students’ reading skills on descriptive texts compared to conventional teaching methods. This study employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design. The population consisted of all seventh-grade students at SMP N 2 Gladagsari, Ampel in the academic year 2024/2025, with Class VII B (30 students) selected as the sample through cluster random sampling. Data were collected using reading comprehension tests consisting of 25 multiple-choice items, administered before and after the treatment. The results showed that the average pre-test score was 69.87, while the post-test average increased to 89.40, indicating a 27.9% improvement. The Paired Sample t-test results revealed a significance value (sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05 and a t-count of 20.402, which exceeded the t-table value of 2.045. The N-gain score was 0.648, categorized as medium improvement. It can be concluded that the Scramble Technique is effective in enhancing students’ reading comprehension of descriptive texts. Besides improving academic performance, this technique fosters active participation, collaboration, and student motivation during the learning process. Keywords: Scramble Technique, Reading Skills, Descriptive Text, Seventh Grade.
