Abstract

The objectives of this study are: (1) to describe how English teachers use Quizizz to support vocabulary for speaking skill, and (2) to identify the challenges and obstacles faced by English teachers in using Quizizz to support vocabulary for speaking skill in English Language Teaching at SMPN 9 Salatiga in the academic year of 2024/2025. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with English teachers, the Vice Principal of Student Affairs, and the Vice Principal of Curriculum. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, and supported by source triangulation to ensure validity. The results of the study show that: (1) English teachers at SMPN 9 Salatiga use Quizizz as an interactive tool to teach vocabulary that students later use in speaking activities, particularly focusing on environmental issues such as littering around the school area. Teachers design quizzes aligned with the curriculum, using features like Mastery Peak Mode to enhance vocabulary retention and encourage students to construct simple spoken sentences with the new words. (2) Teachers face several challenges, including students’ lack of devices and unstable internet access, which limit participation. Other issues involve maintaining focus during gamified sessions, handling technical problems, preventing cheating, and balancing quiz preparation with other teaching duties. Despite these challenges, school support, professional development programs like the Quizizz Optimization Training, and collaboration among teachers help them overcome obstacles and integrate Quizizz effectively to strengthen students’ vocabulary for speaking skill.
