Abstract
Sabila,Laela. 2025. The Effectiveness of Role Play Technique to Teach Speaking Skills of The Eighth Grade Students at SMP Negeri 1 Tengaran in The Academic Year 2024/2025. A Graduating Paper, English Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, State Islamic University (UIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Dr. Mashlihatul Umami, S.Pd.I., M. A. Keywords: Role play Technique, Speaking Skills The purpose of this research was to determine the profile of students' speaking skills before and after being taught using the Role play technique, and to assess the effectiveness of the Role play technique in teaching speaking skills to eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Tengaran in the academic year 2024/2025. This research applied a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group design. This research used purposive sampling. In this research, several activities were carried out which included: giving a pre-test, implementing treatment, and giving a post-test. The participants were 64 students, divided equally into two groups: class VIII C as the experimental group, which received treatment using the Role play technique, and class VIII A as the control group, which was taught using the demonstration technique. The data were collected using speaking tests, validated, and tested for reliability. The pre-test mean score for the experimental group was 59.38, which increased significantly to 82.88 in the post-test. This substantial improvement can be attributed to the treatment using role-play technique, which actively engaged students in the learning process. In contrast, the control group had a pre-test mean score of 55.81, and a modest increase to 65 in the post-test. This smaller improvement is likely due to the use of the demonstration technique, which involved more passive learning compared to the interactive nature of role-play. The T-table of 2.039 is lower than the T-test score of 8.806. In the interval of 0.3 ≤ G ≤ 0.7, the experimental group’s N-Gain score is 0.57, indicating a moderate level, while the control group’s N-Gain score is 0.20, indicating a low level. Thus, it is evident that there is a significant increase after the use of the role play technique compared to the previous method, namely demonstration method. It can be said that the use of role play technique is effective to teach speaking skills for eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Tengaran in the Academic year 2024/2025.
