Abstract

This research aims to investigate the correlation between students’ speaking motivation and anxiety towards their speaking performance of seventh-grade students at SMP Islam Al-Azhar 18 Salatiga in the academic year 2024/2025. The research was motivated by observations that some students enthusiastically participate in speaking activities, while others show hesitation and low confidence. Psychological factors such as motivation and anxiety may influence these behavioral differences. This research employed a quantitative correlational method. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire to assess students’ speaking motivation and anxiety, and a speaking test was evaluated using an analytic rubric. 25 students selected using cluster random sampling. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, normality testing, Pearson Product-Moment correlation, and multiple linear regression using SPSS version 30. The findings revealed that speaking motivation had a positive but not significant correlation with speaking performance (r = 0.337, p > 0.05), while speaking anxiety had a negative but not significant correlation (r = -0.156, p > 0.05). However, when analyzed together, speaking motivation and anxiety showed a significant multiple correlation with speaking performance (R = 0.517, p < 0.05). These results indicate that although the variables showed no significant individual correlations, they jointly significantly influence speaking performance. Keywords: speaking motivation; speaking anxiety; speaking performance; correlation; quantitative research
