Abstract

Rozana, Farih. 2025. Code Mixing and Code Switching Analysis Used by Kim VVUP in an Interview on KBS World Indonesian YouTube Channel. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Islamic University Salatiga. Counselor: Dr. Hanung Triyoko, S.S., M.Hum. M.Ed. This study aims to analyze the use of code mixing and code switching by Kim VVUP during her interview on the KBS World Indonesian YouTube Channel. The objective is to identify the types of language alternation and explore the underlying factors influencing its use in a media context. The study highlights the role of these linguistic phenomena in bilingual discourse and how they reflect identity, professionalism, and audience adaptation. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected from the transcription of Kim VVUP’s interview video and analyzed using the typologies of Muysken (2000) for code mixing and Poplack (1980) for code switching. The theoretical frameworks of Myers-Scotton’s Markedness Model and Giles & Coupland’s Accommodation Theory were also applied to interpret the social motivations behind language choices. The findings show that Kim frequently employed insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization in her code mixing, and used tag-switching and intrasentential switching in her code switching. Factors influencing these practices included multilingual identity, K-Pop industry norms, lexical efficiency, and emotional expressiveness. The study concludes that Kim VVUP's bilingual speech is a strategic and expressive tool that bridges local and global identities in digital media.
