Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out the difficulties that teachers face when teaching English as a foreign language in elementary schools and the strategies teachers use to overcome the difficulties faced when teaching English as a foreign language in elementary schools. This study uses a qualitative method. The subjects in this study were four teachers of elementary school English teacher in Leyangan, Kalirejo and Kalongan areas. Data was collected by using interviews. The results of interview will be displayed descriptively to answer the research questions. The interview results showed that teachers face several difficulties in teaching English in elementary schools, such as the class size, differences in student abilities and student motivation in learning English. To overcome these difficulties, teachers apply strategies, namely using interesting media and teaching methods.
