Abstract

This study investigates students' perceptions of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) through photography in writing and speaking activities among tenth-grade students at SMK Muhammadiyah Salatiga in the 2025/2026 academic year. The study aims to explore students' perceptions of the implementation of photography-based PjBL and identify the benefits and challenges they experienced during the learning process. This study employed a qualitative descriptive research design. The participants consisted of ten tenth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis. The findings revealed that all participants had positive perceptions of photography-based PjBL. Students reported that using personal photographs helped them generate ideas, expand their vocabulary, and increase their confidence during speaking activities. Despite these positive outcomes, all ten students identified limited vocabulary as the primary challenge, eight students experienced difficulties with grammar, and nine students reported speaking anxiety during presentations. The study concludes that photography-based PjBL effectively supports the development of EFL productive skills in vocational high schools. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to provide vocabulary scaffolding, grammar support, and a supportive classroom environment to maximize students' learning experiences.
