Abstract

Putra, Willy R., 2018, A Pragmatic Analysis of Illocutionary Force Indicating Device (IFID) Comprehension Through Quiz-Based Test. A graduating Paper. Educational Faculty. English Department. Counselor: Faizal Risdianto, S.S., M.Hum This research was conducted to identify whether the students have the comprehension in making IFID in their utterance. This research also analyzes their ability to classify IFID they create using Searle’s classification of Speech Act. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The researcher chooses sixth semester students in English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga in Academic year 20117/2018. The data obtained through a quiz-based test as written record and voice recording as audio record. The data was analyzed using descriptive qualitative method. The result of this research shows that the students are able to uttered IFID. The IFIDs being used are Performative verb, Stress, Intonation and Questions. Performative verb is uttered in 50 sentences, stress is uttered in 105 sentences, intonation uttered in 75 sentences, question uttered in 3 sentences, and 17 sentences didn’t use any IFID. The results show tendencies of students that they are making utterance in Indonesian or Javanese language and translate it into English which influenced their utterances. The results also show there are students who cannot classify their utterance well and their score are relatively lower in answering classification of IFID.
