Abstract

The objectives of the research are: (1) To find out the implementation of Summary with Illustration to improve students’ reading comprehension for eleventh grade students of MAN Temanggung. (2) To find out what extent the use of Summary with Illustration to improve students’ reading comprehension for eleventh grade students of MAN Temanggung. This research was conducted in MAN Temanggung. The subjects of the research were 30 students of class XIKeagamaan. This research was classroom action research that was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of two meetings. This research used qualitative data and was supported by quantitative data. The qualitative data were collected from teacher and students’ observation checklist. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were collected score from pre-test I, pre-test II, post-test I and post-test II. The result of this research that using summary with illustration as teaching media can improve students’reading comprehension. The students score of reading by using summary with illustration is better than not using summary with illustration. The mean pre and post-test cycle I are 59.8 to 74.8. The mean pre and post-test cycle II are 63.8 to 76.8. The targetof the passing grade is85% of the students who pass the passing grade. The percentages the students who pass the passing grade are 3.33% in the pre-test I, 70% in the post test I, 10% in the pre-test II, and 86.67% in the post test cycle II. It showsthat the students’ percentages who get score higher than the passing grade of post-test cycle II is higher than post-test cycle I. It means that the target is successfully achieved. The t-test of cycle I is 10.155 and cycle II is 15.249. The t-test of cycle I and II is higher than t-table (2.049)/ t-test > t-table, so the result is significantimprovement. It could be concluded that using summary with illustration as teaching media could improve students reading comprehension.
