Abstract

This research aims to find and analyse the derivational affixes which come from verb root base from articles in The New York Times in education section in January 2019. The objective is to analyse the morphological process in the articles of The New York Times in every Thursday in January 2019. Understanding affixes is supposed to have a great effect for students of English Department that they may find many forms of words from just a single word. A descriptive qualitative method is used in this research to investigate the morphological process of derivational affixes from the verb root base found in The New York Times in education section in January 2019. The technique of collecting data are by using documentation types of data, deciding the data, reading the data, and underlining the words in those articles which contain derivational affixes and are verb based then followed by identifying the data, classifying the data, counting the data, and drawing conclusion as the procedure of data analysis. At last, drawing conclusion is also required. The result of this study explains that derivational affixes from the verb root base which been used in the The New York Times website article. There are two kinds of affixes is used. They are suffix and prefix. Varieties of suffix which are used -ance, -ation, -ence, -ent, -er, -ful, -ion, -ite, -ity, -ive, -ly, -ment, -or, -ory, and -ure. These affixes can be used to acquire noun, adverb, adjective from the verb base. While prefixes which are used, they are co-, dis-, in-, out-, over-, and re-. In this case, the prefix in- and re- gives important contribution in developing the meaning. The most used of affixes is a suffix, it is the suffix –ion and –er.
