Abstract

ABSTRACT Elyana, Tiara. 2019. Improving Students’ Writing Ability in “What Are You Doing” Material through Word Wall as Media of the Eighth Grade Students at SMP Negeri 2 Sumowono in the Academic Year of 2019/2020. A Graduating Paper, English Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, State institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Dr. Setia Rini, M.Pd. The objectives of the study are: (1) To know the implementation students’ writing ability in “what are you doing” material through word wall as media of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Sumowono. (2) To find out is there any improvement students’ writing ability in “what are you doing” material through word wall as media of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Sumowono. The methodology of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research consisted of two cycles and each cycle consisted of four steps, they were: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subject of this research was 35 students of VIII-A class of SMP Negeri 2 Sumowono. The data collected were qualitative but also supported by quantitative data. The qualitative data were gained through observation and documentation. The data were in the form field notes, observation checklist, and photographs. Meanwhile, the quantitative data was collected from the test. The researcher used SPSS based on 20.00 for analyzing the test. The result of this research shows that (1) the implementation using word wall as media in writing ability in “what are you doing” material of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Sumowono is really successful. The students who pass the passing grade improve progressively from the cycle I and the cycle II. The passing grade is 70. (2) the improvement of using word wall as media in improving students’ writing ability in “what are you doing” material is significant. It can be seen from the cycle I up to the cycle II. The result of the cycle I, the mean of pre-test is lower than the mean of the post-test. The mean of pre-test is 55,71 and the mean of post-test are 70,00. In the cycle II, the mean of pre-test is lower than the mean of post-test. The mean of pre-test is 71,43 and the mean of post-test are 84,29. The result of t-test in cycle I is 13,899. And cycle 2 are 14,668. Moreover, the t-test in the cycle II is bigger than the t-test of the cycle I. From the result, the researcher concluded that using word wall as media can improve the eighth grade students’ writing ability in “what are you doing” material (simple present continuous tense) at SMP Negeri 2 Sumowono.
