Abstract

This study was carried out to develop the students’ ability of the SimplePresent Tense through Substitution Drills in the seventh grade students of SMPIT Nurul Islam Tengaran in the academic year of 2018/2019. The subjects of this study were consisted 31 students. The research questions in this study are as follows: first, how is the implementation of substitution drills to develop the students’ ability in using simple present tense at the seventh grade students of SMPIT Nurul Islam Tengaran. Second, how is the result of the implement of substitution drills to develop the students’ ability in using simple present tense at the seventh grade students of SMPIT Nurul Islam Tengaran. While the objectives of the study are as follows: first, to describe the implementation of substitution drills in improving the students’ ability in using simple present tense at the seventh grade students of SMPIT Nurul Islam Tengaran. Second, to find out the result of the implement of substitution drills to develop the students’ ability in using simple present tense at the seventh grade students of SMPIT Nurul Islam Tengaran. The method used in this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR). This study was conducted followingKemmisand McTaggart model (1988)with the following procedures of the action research: planning,acting, observing, and reflecting. The study carried out in two cycles. Cycle 1consisted of three meetings and cycle 2 consisted of two meetings. The data gathering in this study through observation, fieldnotes, and test. The study shows that the implementation of the study improved gradually from cycle 1, and cycle 2. The improvement of the study is showed from each cycle. The result of the t-test of cycle 1, and cycle 2 are 9,10.and 15,35. The score of Minimum Mastery Criterion-KriteriaKetuntasan Minimal (KKM) of English lesson was 75, and the target of passing grade was 85%. The mean of post-test in cycle 1 is 73,54 while the mean of post-test in cycle 2 is 84,03. The result of post-test from cycle 1, and cycle 2 are 58%, and 93,5% from the students. The students pass the passing grade in cycle 2. The passing grade of cycle 2 is over the target. In addition, there was a positive response fromthe students about the implementation of the action. In conclusionSubstitution Drills can develop students’ ability of the simple present tense.
