Abstract

ABSTRACT Zain, Villa Shofa. 2018. The Use of Graphic Organizer Strategy to ImproveReading Comprehension (A Classroom Action Research of the Eleventh Grade Students of MA Al-Bidayah Bandungan in the Academic Year of 2018/2019). A Graduating Paper, English Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Dr. Ruwandi, S.Pd, MA. The objectives of the study are: (1) To find out and analyze the implementation Graphic Organizer Strategy to Improve reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of MA Al-Bidayah Bandungan in the academic year of 2018/2019. (2) To find out and analyze the improvement of reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of MA Al-Bidayah Bandungan in the academic year of 2018/2019 by using graphic organizer strategy. The subjects of the study were 27 of students of class XI IPS 1. The methodology of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR) that was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of one meeting. This research used qualitative data and was supported by quantitative data. The qualitative data were collected from teacher and student’s observation checklist. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were collected from pre-test I, pre-test II and post-test I, post-test II. The result of this study showed that (1) The implementation of Graphic Organize Strategy improve reading comprehension was good. In the meeting of cycle I the students’ activity was good. However not all of the students paid attention to the teacher’s explanation, but they responded the teacher’s question very well. Meeting in cycle II, the teacher did the teaching learning process and the students followed the meeting it seriously. (2) There was an improvement of reading comprehension of formal invitation thought graphic organizer strategy. It was shown by the result of the cycle I; the mean of post-test was higher than mean of the pre-test. The mean increase of pre test and post test cycle I was 59.44 to 68.33. The mean increase of pretest and post test cycle II was 79.07 to 88.33 and the percentage of minimum passing grade is 85%. There was a significant improvement of students’ reading comprehension of formal invitation thought graphic organizer strategy from the cycle I up to the cycle II. It was shown by the results of t-test in cycle I was 7.9 and cycle II is 14.9 was higher than t-table (2.059). Moreover, the t-test score in the cycle II is higher than the t-test score cycle I. From the results, the researcher concluded that graphic organizer strategy can be used to improve reading comprehension. Keyword:Reading Comprehension, Formal Invitation, Graphic Organizer Strategy.
