Abstract

The objectives of this research were to describe and to find out the extent of the students’ writing skills of eight grade of SMP IT Nidaul Hikmah Salatiga through the use of comic strips and peer group discussion in the academic year of 2017/2018. This research was classified as a quasi-experimental research. It involved 39 students from two groups, class VIII A (20 students) as the experimental groups and class VIII B (19 students) as the control group. The experimental group was taught using comic strips whereas the control group was taught using peer group discussion. The data were obtained by using two essay writing tests; pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was given to both groups before the treatment and the post-test was given after the treatment. The data of the pre-test and post-test of both groups were analyzed by using descriptive analysis. The result of the research shows that there is no significant differences in the writing ability between the students who are taught using comic strips and those who are taught peer group discussion. The students’ writing skills were measured quantitatively by comparing the mean scores of pre-test and post-test. The findings also revealed that the mean scores of the students’ writing performance using comic strips increased from 9.02 in the pre-test to 13.03 in the post-test. The gain score of experimental research the students writing skills was 4.01. Whereas in control group, the mean scores of the students’ writing performance using peer group discussion increased from 9.09 in the pre-test to 13.00 in the post-test. The gain score of the students writing skills was 3.91 point. It means that, there is no significant different of improvement in writing skills by comparing those gain score in the English teaching and learning process at SMP IT Nidaul Hikmah Salatiga.
