Abstract

This study scrutinizes the register which is used in needlework at PasarRaya, Salatiga. The objectives of the study are to describe the situational andlinguistic characteristics of register in needlework at Pasar Raya, Salatiga. Theobject of the study is the language produced by the tailor and the customer in theirtransactional activity. The data was taken by using note taking technique andanalyzed by applying Biber's register analysis and Halliday's situational context.This study shows that the situation in the interaction determines the use ofregister. The situation covers three parameters, e.g. field, tenor, and mode. Fieldincludes some services like making new cloth, restyling, repairing and thesequences of interaction like describing the condition of the clothes, givingcommand about what have to do by the tailor, and taking the ready made clothesincluding the payment. At the level of tenor, the interactants who take roles astailor and customer conduct certain relationship which is influenced by theirpower and the frequency of the contact. Mode covers the channel, the medium,and the purpose of the utterance. Since the interaction happens through spokenmedium within visual and hearable channel, the addressor gets some feedbacksfrom the addressee immediately.This study also finds the linguistic characteristics in some linguistic unitssuch as word, phrase, sentence, and discourse. At the level of word, the linguisticcharacteristics of needlework register are marked by the use of complex word,blend, clipped word, borrowed word, coinage, and abbreviation. It is alsocharacterized by the use of many kinds of sentences such as declarative sentence,imperative sentence, interrogative sentence, exclamatory sentence, derivedsentence, and incomplete sentence. At the level of discourse, it is characterized bythe use of some utterances in which the meaning will be different if they are usedin different situation.
