Abstract
This study analyzed the improvement of students' speaking ability through drills.The objectives of the study are to find out the students' speaking ability who aretaught using drills, to know the situation of teaching and learning when drills isimplemented in speaking class, and to find out the strengths and the weaknessesof the using drill in speaking class. The methodology of the study is collaborativeclassroom action research. In this research the writer was the teacher and assistedby an observer, she notes all of the process in learning activities. To find out theimprovement of students' speaking ability she used test, namely oral test, pre test,and posttest. She used two cycles, in each cycle comprised of two meetings andeach meeting comprised planning, implementation of the action, and reflection.The study show that the students involved actively in teaching learning process,they were more encourage and confident to speak in English than before. Basedon field note in each meeting, it can be found that drills have strength andweakness in speaking class. The result of this action research is the majority ofstudents' speaking ability had improved with using drills. It can be seen from themean scores of pretest 57,72 to 64,31 in post test cycle 1, and the mean score ofpre test 73,26 to 78,07 in post test cycle 2. In oral test the percentage of students'speaking ability rate, they are 54,55% fair, 40,90% good, 4,55% very good incycle 1, and 38,46% fair, 42,31%good,19,23% very good in cycle 2.
