Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the forms and reason of passive used inthe Jakarta Post 27/112011 edition newspaper. Besides it is aimed to describemotivation of using the passive voice forms. Concerning with the objective of thestudy, the writer uses descriptive qualitative method as the approach to explorethe occurrence of passive voice. The data are taken from Jakarta Post newspaper27/1/2011 edition. The writer used linguistics elements to identify the data. Basedon data analysis, there are some findings of passive voice forms. There are twoforms of passive voice forms: some common tenses and modals. Tenses used inthis paper are present, past, perfect and past perfect. Modals are will, can, may,must. Moreover there are reasons such as it is not necessary to mention the doer ofthe action as it is obvious who he is/ was/will be, the learner don't know exactlywho did the action etc.
