Abstract

English becomes a very important language in the world. Especially Indonesia, it does not only become an international language, but also has beentaught at schools, and included into national examination. Besides those twoaspects, there are many job vacancies that necessity someone who is able to speakEnglish, in addition, Indonesia has many beautiful tourisms resorts, which means,there are many tourists who come to Indonesia to visit those places. Finally, wecan say that Indonesians do need to be able to speak English.However, in fact, there are many Indonesians who cannot speak English,especially the students. They have learned English since primary until senior highschool, or even until university level. Based on that problem, this study conducted. There are two research problems: 1. what are the kinds of difficultiesin English speaking? 2. What are the factors dominantly influence the studentsproblem difficulties in in English speaking class? 3. What strategies do the teacherand students do to overcome those difficulties in English speaking class?This is a descriptive study. The subjects of the study are the eighthgraders of Junior High School in SMP Negeri I Kangkung. There were threeinstruments used for this study, observation, documentasi and interview guideThe observation was conducted six times at 1st to 17th of Febuary 2011. Theinterview was conducted with the student, to ten students at 14th ofFebuary 2011.The raw data collected from the observation and all of instruments were analyzedqualitatively and they were presented in the form of description and tables.The difficulties in English speaking class of eighth graders duringEnglish lesson are: lack of motivation of students, lack of vocabulary, lack ofconfident, lack of knowledge of grammar, environment, lack of teacher's role, andteacher's technique. The most dominant difficulty which causes the studentsunable to speak English during English lesson is lack of teacher's role.As conclusion, students are unable to speak English during Englishlesson, since lack of teacher's role. Their English teacher does not give themmany speaking activities during English class. She also does not give themopportunity to be active participating during the learning and teaching process.For instance, she does not ask the students to read, translate the text, or answeringthe questions. These make the students do not involve maximally during thelearning and teaching process, this causes them unable to speak English duringEnglish class.
